A Rocking Day!

Thursday 11th of June Room 7 and 11 had an air guitar competition. It was a blast!

We had the supplies of 20 pieces of newspaper, feathers, coloured paper, sparkly paper, tape and scissors. We had teams of three, 5 minutes to plan and 30 minutes to make a costume. The costumes  had to have in total; 2 tops, 1 pair of pants, 1 skirt and accessories. The aim of the competition was to have two people from each group dressed in the bizzare costumes and then perform on their  air guitar for 30 seconds in front of the two classes without the costume falling apart.

We were judged on our team work, style of clothes, guitar playing, our paper clothes not ripping apart and if the costume fits.
Everyone had a ball having fun designing the costumes and laughing at the others (in a nice way)!

News and Home Tasks Term 2 Week 9

We now have two students overseas, one in America and one in Australia.  We are thinking of them and hope they are having a great time with their families. Hopefully they will be able to post some photos and tell us what they are up to.  Maybe they might do a 'guess where I am' quiz for us.

Beau's Operation

Hi Rm 7,
Beau had her operation yesterday morning and it all went great. She was so upset that she couldn't go into the playroom yesterday that she was crying and crying until the nurse came and told her that she could use it today. We are going to go and see her later on but for now we need to catch up on some things-like sleep!!!

What are you up to at school, anything interesting, is Mrs Hosie back at school? How are the lino prints going? I bet they look great!

We are staying in the Waldorf Hotel, Ronald Mcdonald house has two floors of hotel rooms (10 and 3) where they send people if their main place is full. We are staying on floor 10 and it's really high. We have a balcony it's only small but it's enough to scare my mum so much that she won't go near it, but personally I think it's great! I wish we were on the top floor (18)!

Hi Rm 7!

Hi Rm 7,

I've been having a great time in Auckland. The plane ride was really fast and I got to hand out the Air New Zealand lollies so we got to keep all the leftovers of them!YUM!!! We are staying in Parklane Motel but tomorrow we are going to stay at Ronald McDonald House while Beau is in hospital after her surgery on Thursday.

Yesterday we went to Rainbows End for 4 hours.

Week 7 News

It is great to see the blue skies at last. The students were pleased that the Cross Country was able to be held today.  Check out Lily's post and photos below.

Cross Country

Cross Country! It is that time of year again - some were excited and some were not. On Thursday we were going to have our cross country but what do you know it, was raining so we moved it to Monday and it was a wonderful day for it.

The day was so much fun. More fun than everyone thought it would be. To me the most exciting and funny part was the adults' race. You should have seen how slow they were. It was unreal!

The only bad parts were the sore chests at the end of the races and the way nearly everyone got covered in mud and water while running. This was because everyone worked really hard to meet their goal of becoming all they could.

As I said cross country was lots of fun and to make it even more exciting it was also a house competition. And the results? Yellow House was 4th, Red House was 3rd, Blue came 2nd and Green came 1st. Even though I wasn't in the winning house,  it was still a great day anyway.

Now to make it better the people that got 1st, 2nd or 3rd, get to go to Rabbit Island and race against other schools, the rest of the school will be wishing them luck all the way. Go Mapua School!

News and Home Learning T2, Week 6

Another fun week coming up with plenty of physical and mental challenges to keep us invigorated. Reuben Wiki's visit on Wednesday is definitely up at the top of the list of exciting things for the week. Not sure whether everyone would add the cross country to that list  but I am proud of the way they are taking the build up practice seriously and trying to be all they can. I am looking forward to catching up with any of you that can make it to watch the cross country event at Aranui Park. Bring your loudest supporter's voice - or maybe something to blow or rattle :  ) to cheer them on.
Hopefully you can all keep the winter ills and chills at bay this week - and in my case get rid of them.

News and Home Tasks Term 2 Week 5

It's great to be back.  We had fun on Monday discussing what we had been up to in the four weeks I was away and the class is now trying to solve the puzzles I brought back from Singapore.  They all enjoyed the Pocky sticks that are popular with children in Singapore and are hoping they will be made available in NZ sometime soon.

Bobby,Nessie and YOU!

Dear Mrs H

We found out all about Bobby. It's a nice but sad story. Bobby sounded very genorous to give up all his time to watch over his master. Bobby seemed very attached to his master leaving only twice a day for his meals.
We were wondering if you bought Nessie because he looked so cuddly and irresistible.
Enough about Bobby and Nessie! We've got some questions to ask you.
We heard you've gone from  freezing to cool to boiling. How do you feel about the weather?
Well speaking about weather we had a major storm last night. The wind was howling and trees were cracking up all night. No sleep at all. I guess that means we don't have to do any more homework cause were soooo tired zzzzzzz.
Now we've got something for you to find out. What does this mean: Adios cule (it's in Spanish).
Mrs Ryan said to say it' s fine to meet her on Sunday.

Research detectives succeed again!

Yes, Bodrum it was.  Congratulations. A really beautiful resort in Turkey. You can put it on your 'Future Places to Visit' list. How are you getting on with the new photo clues?
Thanks for posting the photos.  Sounds like you have been having a great time while I have been gone.
We are now on an island off Singapore. It took about an hour by ferry to get here.  It is an island of another country (not Singapore). Not much in the way of clues but you might be getting really good at your research skills.
Great to see Aleisha left a comment telling us about her school in Gisbourne - check it out.

Another Try At The Answer

Dear Mrs Hosie,

We have re thought about the ferries to Kos and Nicholas thinks he found out the answer. Is it Bodrum? 

Mad Hair Day was a great day, it was fun to see everyone's creative style! The House Leaders did a great job to organize the day and we had a blast, we wish you could've been there.

We also had an Asthma Awareness Day and we had to try and dress up in orange and yellow. At buddy time we were given a orange or yellow balloon to pass between us and our buddy. That was fun because it was quite windy.

Latest update from the Northern Hemisphere

Hi everyone
Good to see you have been on my trail and checking out the answers to the questions about the photos and places I have been to. I am having a great time but am now on the last week of my trip away.


Yes, you are right about the statue being Paddington Bear at Paddington railway station in London. And you were correct about why we couldn't travel to Switzerland. Check out hte headlines as it appears to be coming back this way.  Hopefully we will still be able to fly out next week. Well done.

Unfortunately you haven't cracked the name of the place we were staying in  in Turkey. We didn't leave from Greece to go to Kos.  We left from a seaside town on the southern coast of Turkey.  See if you can find it now.

GLad to hear that Mad Hair Day was fantastic.  How about posting some photos on the blog for me?

I am looking forward to being back and seeing the work you have been doing with Mrs Ryan. I bet it is fantastic. She is a very talented person and it was great that she was available while I was away.
Now for the last photos and questions for you to research.  I haven't been able to get to a computer where I could upload the photos so these are of the places I have been to while there was no news.  Can you work out the names of the places and the importance/meaning of the objects/things in the photos?

Hi Mrs H,

We've located where the ferry leaves from and what the statue is and where it is.
Is the statue of Paddington Bear at Paddington railway station in London?

We think that the ferry leaves from Piraeus, Athens. It was a bit of a challenge that we had to research today in class, but most of us found a website that gave us the answer(s) we needed.  We hope we got it correct.

 You can't travel to Switzerland because of the Volcanic eruptions in Iceland leaving behind a huge pitch black ash cloud. Besides all the drama, we hope you've had a great time and the weather has been agreeing with you.

Mad Hair Day was fantastic, lots of people got into the day with wacky hair designs. The House Leaders did a great job to organize the winners and overall it was a really great day!These are the winners from our class:

It was such a laugh! We wish you could of been there. ( Mr Chalmers looks really funny in a rainbow mullet! )

Mrs R has been great at teaching us music and art. Recently we have made sgcraffetti walls and have drawn people to glue onto our paper and we have done some monoprints that look really effective. We have also started to learn about how to 'keep the beat' and have come up with some pretty cool moves!

Did you know that Miss Hough is now Mrs Barnes? How exciting!

Grounded!

It was great to read your posts and to hear that you have had great holidays too.  You have done well with checking the information about Hippocrates and Istanbul.  The seaside town in Turkey wasn't Izmir.  Another hint might be to let you know that the Greek island we visited was Kos.  See if you can find a tourist destination where ferries travel to Kos each day.
Doh! We have been grounded and were not able to fly out to Basel, Switzerland or Berlin in Germany. What do you know about this situation? What caused it and what are the results?
We came up with plan B and went to Cornwall to stay for a few days instead.  As we were travelling I found a new friend.  Who is my friend and where is his statue found?
 

The answers to your photos

Dear Mrs Hosie,

These are our answers to your photos that you sent us.

We thought that the islands which was the birthplace of Hippocrates was Greece. We know that the Blue Mosque and the largest Bazaar in the world are in Istanbul in Turkey. The city which is the seventh biggest city in the world is Istanbul and it is spread over two continents. We found out that Istanbul was spread over Asia and Europe.

Is the popular tourist resort Izmir? We are not really sure if it is or not.

Can you keep up to date with us while you are flying all over the world.

Hey Mrs Hosie

A couple of us found out where you went in Europe but the rest of us have to find out this evening so we   can't tell you just yet. We're having a great time over here and we bet it is the same story where you are. It's a shame you have to miss mad hair day because we can tell it's going to be really wild!!! It was funny when we were reviewing the holidays, it turned out that Rm 7 had spread in every direction! We are enjoying researching where in the world you are. The pictures you take are very well thought out, but our favourite was when you put the Mapua School hat on the lion's nose!

Where in the world???

Hi Room 7
I bet  you are all having a great time chilling out with your family and friends.  I hope you leave some messages or posts telling me about the things you got up to in the holidays.

I have been travelling outside of the Uk with Karen, Matt and Brian. Can you work out which cities (there were 3) and countries (2 countries) I visited? Check out the clues and the photos.

The first city we visited has a population of around 15 million people and a guide claimed it is the 7th biggest city in the world; it is the only city in the world which spans 2 continents; it is built on 7 hills, is home to the largest covered bazaar in the world and the Blue mosque.

The second city we visited was on the coast of the Aegean Sea and is a popular tourist resort. Most of our time was spent on the beach (first photo). We also visited a village a few kilometres inland and found a very simple traditional way of life where the families make their living mainly from farming, weaving carpets and kilims. The photos show a mosque, farm animals and the dining area where we were treated to a traditional meal.

We took a ferry to another country made up of many islands. The island we visited was the birthplace of Hippocrates.   We wandered around the island and found many traces of its ancient past in the form of ruins and a tree known as  the tree of Hippocrates (in the center of the town).Which country and island were we on and what is Hipporcrates known for?

It was great to see you had worked out where the first 2 photos were taken. I was very impressed with the extra information you supplied about Singapore. Can you add the information you know about the artist who created the horse sculpture?
